Car financing FAQ: bad credit, bankruptcy and consumer proposals

Can I get car financing after a bankruptcy?

Yes, it’s often possible, even shortly after your discharge. However, each lender has its own criteria, and no answer is guaranteed in advance. Our guide to auto financing after a bankruptcy explains the steps.

What about during a consumer proposal?

That’s possible too. Before signing a new credit agreement, talk to your proposal administrator. Read our article on auto financing after a consumer proposal.

My bank said no. Is it worth trying elsewhere?

Yes. Each lender assesses files using its own criteria, and some specialize in 2nd chance credit. First, see what to do when your car loan is denied.

I have no credit history. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily. A first-time buyer or a newcomer can get car financing, often with proof of stable employment. Our guide to auto financing with no credit history has the details.

Car financing FAQ: payments, down payment and rates

How much can I pay per month?

It depends on your income, your other payments and your budget. To get an idea in 30 seconds, try our payment calculator (in French). It doesn’t check your credit file.

Do I need a down payment?

Not always. However, a down payment lowers the amount financed and, in turn, your payment. It can also reassure the lender when your credit is damaged.

What interest rate will I pay?

The rate depends on your file, the lender and the vehicle. With bad credit, it is generally higher than a bank rate. The contract always shows the rate and the total cost of credit: take the time to read it before signing.

Can I trade in my current vehicle?

Yes, even if you still owe money on it. Keep in mind, though, that a balance carried over to the new loan increases the amount financed.

The application and documents

Does applying affect my credit?

The payment calculator doesn’t. The financing application, however, involves a check of your credit file, with your consent. According to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, several checks close together may affect your score.

Which documents should I prepare?

Usually: photo ID, your last 2 pay stubs, proof of address and a void cheque. Self-employed workers provide their notices of assessment instead. See our article on the self-employed car loan.

How long does it take to get an answer?

An advisor calls you back quickly after your online application. The time for a final answer then depends on the lender and the documents required.

The vehicle and next steps

Which vehicles can I buy?

Pre-owned vehicles of all makes, inspected before sale: cars, SUVs and pickups. The choice depends on the amount your file allows you to finance. Browse our pre-owned inventory.

Do the vehicles come with a warranty?

The manufacturer’s warranty in effect applies when the vehicle is still eligible. An extended warranty is also available.

Can this loan help me rebuild my credit?

Yes, as long as you make every payment on time. Payment history is the most important part of your score. Also ask the lender whether it reports your payments to Equifax and TransUnion. Our guide explains how to rebuild credit with a car loan.
